Lecture 1 Flashcards
Therapeutic exercise definition
Systematic, planned performance of boudoir movements, postures of physical activities intended to provide a patient/clinic to heal/improve/reduce health risk
Patient definition
Persons diagnosed by a PT who have impairments and/or functional deficits. Has a diagnosed problem.
Client definition
Persons who are not diagnosed with impairments or functional deficits. Prevention Focused.
Hallmarks of therapeutic exercise
Individualized, clinical decision making skills, evidence based, independence
ICF
International Classification of Health Status, Functioning, and Disability
Biopsychosocial model
Inter-disciplinary model that connects biology, psychology, and socio-environmental
Biological
Physical and mental health
Psychological
Mood, personality, behavior
Social
Culture, family, socioeconomic
Conceptual model of ICF, biological
Health conditions
Body functions and structures
Activities and participation
Part 1
Conceptual model of ICF, personal
Contextual factors
Environmental factors
Personal factors
Health condition
Acute or chronic diseases, disorders, injuries that have an impact on a person’s level of activity
Body Functions definition
Physiological functions of body systems
Body structures definition
Anatomical parts of the body
Impairment definition
Problems in body function and/or body structure such as a significant deviation or loss
Doesn’t usually cause a complete loss of function because it’s PART of a system
Musculoskeletal impairments
Pain, muscle weakness, reduced torque
Neuromuscular impairments
Impaired balance, postural stability, incoordination
Cardiovascular impairments
Decreased aerobic capacity, impaired circulation
Integumentary impairments
Immobile or adherent scarring
Activity definition
Execution of a task or action
Activity limitation
Difficulty an individual may have in executing activities, tasks, actions
Basic activities of daily living
BADLS, bathing feeding, dressing
Instrumental Activties of Daily Living
IADLS, more complex tasks like occupations, school, driving, sports
Participation
Involvement in a life situation, ex : job or hobby
Participation restrictions
Problems an individual may experience with involvement in life situations
Disability
Negative aspect of impairments, activity limitations, and participation restrictions.
Occurs with a loss of ADLs and can be chronic or acute
Primary prevention
Prevention to a susceptible population. Ex: Tai chi class for middle age to prevent falls
Secondary prevention
Early diagnosis to decrease duration of illness, severity of disease, sequelae (specific details for those at risk)
Tertiary prevention
Use of rehab to decrease degree of disability and restore functions
Modifiable lifestyle factors that cause disability
Obesity
Diabetes
Hypertension
High cholesterol
Cigarette smoking
Sedentary
If all 5 risk factors of disability were eliminated…
53% of disability could be prevented nationally
Environmental factors
Environmental influences on functioning and disability
Personal factors
Features of an individual that are not part of the health condition
