Lecture 6: Sexual problems Flashcards
supernormal stimuli
te veel stimuli over sex dan waar we voor gemaakt zijn, zorgt voor evolutionary mismatch
triggers to desire (Toates)
- uncertainty
- novelty
- variety
- forbidden fruit
- ease of access, low cost
- exaggerated attraction
- youth
wat zei toates over Maslows hierarchy
sex should not be in the physiological layer. want je hebt het niet nodig om te overleven
- sex is not like eating (if you dont have sex, you wont die)
- sexual desire can be compared to eating (desire/craving)
- libido -> incentive motivation
oke
sex is an emotion: how do the two systems relate
system 1 is more arousal, and system 2 is more related to memories etc
erectile dysfunction voorbeeld systemen
system 2: it will go wrong again.
system 1 is meer de physiology, die dus weer door system 2 wordt geinhibeerd.
wanting and liking is different
bijvoorbeeld: je wil niet sporten, maar als je er bent vind je het wel leuk. met seks: misschien heb je er geen zin in, maar als je er mee begint vind je het wel leuk.
addiction to porn (and other things): low liking but high wanting (compulsive)
neurotransmitters of liking and wanting
opiods -> liking -> pull
dopamine -> wanting -> push
together = desire
sexual dysfunction diagnoses in men
- male hypoactive sexual desire disorder
- erectile disorder
in reality there is no difference between desire and arousal. dit is bij vrouwen wel aangepast maar bij mannen niet.
oke
there is no biological evidence for a difference in arousal between men and women.
oke
desire disorders are of interest for the pharmaceutical industry, they earn a lot by selling these pills. also on their sites you can quickly think: hey, maybe i have this too? this is problematic volgens graham
oke
what should you do with patients who have sexual issues
education is the most important, often wrong ideas about societal expectations about what is normal.
Graham: how sex is represented in society
- desire is strong and spontaneous, rather than reactive and responsive.
- orgasms are goals to be achieved.
- sex means PIV
- good sex requires frequent and novel experiences
- sex is the glue that holds relationships together
- life events should not intrude into the regular schedule of having sex
- sex is a vital, healthy and central part of any relationship
- male desire and orgasms are uncomplicated, womens desire and orgasms are complex, elusive and difficult to achieve
Hyde definition sex
sexual behaviour produces arousal and increases the chance of orgasm
(maar veel mensen denken dat sex PIV is)
