Q

parental investment theory

A

sexual selection, competitions between members of one gender (usually male) and preferential choice by members of one gender (usually female)

behaviour and resources invested by parents to achieve the survival and reproductive success of their genetic offspring. females have much more investment because they will be carrying the baby. the difference in parental investment therefore influences the mating and the sexual selection.

but very heteronormative, and differences may be small.

Q

singh

A

female physical attractiveness depends on the hip to waist ratio. this is dependent on reproductive success

but this is incorrect, they measured all the playboy models and miss america pageant winners, and the hip to waist ratio was not always 0.7.

Q

freud

A

said sex is very important, can explain a lot of things by sex drive, a kind of coping. the unconscious is important, these automatic processes you are not aware of are important in the sexual response. also the pleasure principle, that may be sex, and the ideas about the person you want to be, and they may conflict.

maar ook heel male-centered. he thought there was a kind of process to which women first have a clitoral orgasm (more immature) and then when a women grows she is able to have a more vaginal orgasm. dit is natuurlijk niet zo.

Q

Laan on freud

A

only heterosexual men have vaginal orgasms, when they orgasm inside a vagina. because all orgasms are clitoral, the clitoris is always responsible for the orgasm! the vagina is not sensitive.

Q

social exchange theory

A

rewards compared to costs, in general we want high rewards and low costs. we can exchange sex for love, love for sex, sex for money…. sex is something you can exchange

we like equity, also regarding the matching hypothesis

Q

symbolic interaction theory =

A

human nature and social order are products of symbolic communication among people, in many forms of sexual expression, two people have to develop a definition of the situation.

17
Q

sexual scripts=

A

sexual behaviour is a result of elaborate prior learning that teaches us an etiquette of sexual behaviour. scripts are plans that people carry in their heads for what they are going to do

18
Q

why do most relationships around the world follow the same patterns

A

because people use these sexual scripts

19
Q

sexual scripts

A

very male dominated, not optimal for women

20
Q

social institutions that influence sex

A
  1. religion
  2. economy
  3. family
  4. medicine
  5. law
21
Q

5 differences in male versus female sexuality

A
  1. masturbation
  2. attitudes towards sex
  3. porn use
  4. the orgasm gap
  5. sex drive
22
Q

Bogus pipeline study

A

asked participants about sex, three conditions: bogus pipeline, anonymous, exposure threat.

bij de bogus pipeline meer eerlijkheid.
exposure condition: women underreported due to social norms

23
Q

sex niet alleen reproductive reasons, gaat ook heel veel om sexual pleasure. maar 0.1% of sex ends up in conception

A

oke

24
Q

Meston & Buss response to Laan over dat sex alleen voor pleasure is

A

4 factors:
1. physical reasons: stress reduction, pleasure, physical desirability, experience seeking
2. goal attainment: resources, social status, revenge, utilitarian
3. emotional subfactors: love, commitment, expression
4. insecurity: self-esteem boost, duty/pressure, mate guarding

25
Q

insights by comparing sex with eating

A

in general you cannot compare the two because we dont need sex to survive.

but we also often dont eat to survive, have craving and rewards. when there is an opportunity to eat/have sex, you can take it. you can eat/have sex because of love, or the experience

26
Q

physiological prerequisites for sex

A
  • male: erection and rigidity
  • female: swelling and humidity

both due to vasocongestion.
penetration can still happen without female prerequisites, therefore pain happens more

27
Q

3 gender differences in experienced sexual pleasures and displeasures

A
  1. orgasm
  2. pain
  3. violence
28
Q

study over iemand uitvragen

A

do you want to go on a date? men 50% yes, women 56%
do you want to go to my apartment? men 69% yes, women 6% yes
do you want to have sex? men 75% yes, women 0% yes

29
Q

Laan’s BPS ideeen over gender differences

A

there are no biological differences, it all has to do with rewards. if there are no valuable rewards, there is no desire (some people disagree)

social:
- men more masturbation, and more experiences. girls start kissing and then go on with masturbation and orgasm etc. boys have more knowledge
- coïtal imperative
- no education about the clitoris

should approach desire as a state, not a trait. dus het ligt aan de manier waarop je er naar kijkt.

30
Q

testosterone car analogy

A

you cannot say that when there is a lot of gas in the car you can drive faster. you need gas, but it cannot make you drive faster. it does not matter how much there is

same with testosterone, we need it for sexual desire, but more testosterone does not mean more desire. therefore you cannot say men have a higher sex drive because they have more testosterone
