Lecture 4: Sexual serial killing Flashcards

1
Q

voorbeeld van kind die een fetisch krijgt van ballon

Q

waarom is violent pornography gevaarlijk

A

omdat dopamine pathways ook geactiveerd worden door fantasieen, waardoor je dit gaat willen.
watching repeated acts of violence can lead to violent cues inferring with dopamine pathways

inhibition

A

top-down, from the prefrontal cortex that suppresses the subcortex.

Q

how is inhibition relevant in serial killing

A

the PFC can be disrupted:
* high emotion
* traumatic impact
* chemical impact

when there is such a disruption, the inhibition is removed.

Q

opioids and dopamine

A

opioids are largely responsible for our mood, when the mood goes down, we tend to take control action, mediated by dopamine, in order to lift our mood.

dit is evident in BPD, where there are problems in this circuitry of the brain.

stress weakens the PFC and increases the subcortical dopamine.
stressors here have a human causation, and then killer attacks can be triggered (laughing at, job loss, romantic rejection, etc).

Q

excitation transfer

A

the rope-bridge experiment

fear on crossing bridge -> sexual desire on reaching safety

participants crossed a scary bridge and then asked the men questions, and looked for sexual themes in their answer. there tended to be more sexual themes than compared to a concrete bridge that was less scary.

excitation transfer from fear to sexual desire

Q

Niklas Frank and Hans Frank

A

Hans was executed because he was a war criminal. he would imagine his father walking to the gallows (hanging) and this disturbed him, but when he came sexually matured he masturbated to the image of his father.

arousal can be transferred from an awful experience to something sexual.

Q

wat gebeurt er als je steeds naar geweld kijkt

A

the ability of violent cues to get a hold of the VTA-Nacc pathways increases (dopamine)

Q

cocaine en sexual killing

A

anthony sowell used cocaine, which boosts dopamine. this can increase any sexual desires that are already there.

with a drug like cocaine you get an interaction between a sexual motivation and a drug motivation, and the incentive is strengtened by these two.

17
Q

boredom and sexual killing

A

Joel Rifkin: low arousal -> more action sensations seeking -> dopamine involved, which can activate any sexual desires present

18
Q

sexual motivation and attachment motivation are separated. we can feel both sexual and romantic feelings towards one person but they are separate systems. therefore they can be separate.

A

oke

19
Q

hoe zitten die twee motivations bij sexual killers

A

alleen sexual motivation, often combined with anger/dominance.

20
Q

relative development of the systems

A

system 1 is fast to develop, system 2 is slow to develop. therefore in adolescence there is a gap between the development. this leads to risky behaviours in teenagers. the inhibitory has not yet caught up with excititory. this is where they start with crimes, and then this keeps on going until they start with serial killing.

21
Q

evolutionary theory of socialization

A

environment can be either uncertain and difficult: sexual development and reward becomes earlier. in an uncertain world, you never know what is coming next. so you need to mate quickly.

or certain and supportive: sexual development and reward becomes later

22
Q

dus nog een keer relatie opioids and dopamine

A

low opioids is lower mood -> in order to control for this, dopamine goes up -> opioids up and mood goes up

23
Q

if you are in a comfortable environment, prosocial behaviour gives you comfort. if you grow up in a hard environment, aggressive behaviour gives you comfort.

A

ke

24
Q

sensory preconditioning

A

neurons that fire together wire together.

violence and cruelty merge together, when you think of one triggers the memory of the other.

25
Q

traumatizations

A
  1. sexual, physical or psychological abuse within the femily (bullying, effeminate behaviour, bedwetting)
  2. bullying by other children (facial features, small height, feminine dressing, stuttering, accents)
  3. envy that others are treated better
  4. being abandoned or feeling so
  5. confusion over parentage
26
Q

problemen voor de geboorte

A

Henry Lee Lucas: problemen in de baarmoeder door drugs en alcohol, abuse, prostitution.

27
Q

taunting over looks voorbeeld

A

Eric Cooke

28
Q

David Berkowitz

A

son of sam, nyc, was terribly envious of couples and would should the women. very envious, was given up for adoption but his sister wasnt.

early: sibling rivarly, later: sexual envy, eroticized in going back to murder places

29
Q

ted bundy

A

confused over who was his mother, was born illegitimate. was told his mother was his sister. was very good at cognitive empathy -> put his arm in a sling and pretended he broke it and then dropped the books. chewed over how damaged he was about being lied to.

30
Q

different types of empathy

A

cognitive empathy (predicting the behaviour of others) and emotional empathy (feeling others pain)

31
Q

sometimes the motivation behind killings is linked to sex, but some are motivated by the distress caused by their earlier sexual victimization

A

oke

32
Q

John Bunting / The Snowtown Killers

A

Bunting hated pedophiles because he had abused people as a child, wrongly associated all homosexuals with pedophilia and gathered a group of misfits to cleanse society. victims went through extreme torture.

-> sexual abuse has a large power to trigger lasting resentment, and illustrates collective guilt attached to a group.

33
Q

homosexual killers

A

some homosexual killers feel a strong sexual attraction to gay sex, which is fused with hatred towards them. they often hate themselves for the sexual desire they feel towards their victims

34
Q

the cooling off period between killings

A

can still be filled with fantasies, use of souvenris or planning for future killings. can also involve low mood, which can be lifted by killing again.

35
Q

killing and self esteem

A

with repeated success of killing, an initially low self esteem may become a dangerously high self esteem. some killers also take delight in the publicity of their capture

36
Q

joseph fisher

A

drew a comparison between the followers of serial killers and those of sports

37
Q

what traumatizations are there in sexual maturity

A
  1. failure to find a girlfriend
  2. perceived infidelity of a partner
  3. erectile dysfunction
  4. catching a sexually transmitted disease
  5. a sexual orientation that is uncomfortable or mocked by others
38
Q

jeffrey dahmer

A

killed for company

  • psychological abuse through neglect
  • mother - large amounts of medication during pregnancy
  • mother seriously depressed at time of birth
  • messy divorce
  • left alone in house
  • hobby found in dissection of road-kill
  • could later dissection of humans be a re-run of hobby?
  • use of part of bodies in masturbation
39
Q

dennis nilsen; excitation transfer

A
  • grooming and sexual abuse by grandfather
  • exposure to dead body of grandfather
  • fantasy of being grandfather and victim being him
  • autobiography - dopamine flowing
  • as with Jeffrey Dahmer, no pleasure in killing per se (?)
40
Q

some features of male-female paired killers

A

escalation from fringe sexual activities
solo - voyeurism, exhibitionism
paired – pornography, pimping, group sex

41
Q

evolutionary perspective on differences in male and female killing

A

male: involves stalking/hunting
female: involves home base

42
Q

causal perspective on sex of serial killers

A

male: raw sensory stimulation
female: contextual information
