Galupo: There is nothing to do about it: nonbinary individuals experience of gender dysphoria Flashcards
1
Q
doel van studie
A
investigate how nonbinary individuals experience gender dysphoria, which has been traditionally understood through a binary framework focusing on male-female distinctions
2
Q
three main categories of dysphoria
A
- no gender dysphoria
- aspects of gender/sex (societal gender roles or their assigned gender at birth)
- aspects of body (body shape, secondary sex traits, reproductive capability)
3
Q
6 core themes
A
- androgyny or fluidity: participants often desire an androgynous appearance that more accurately reflects their nonbinary identity (discomfort with traditionally masculine or feminine traits)
- feminine and masculine traits: some participants aimed to achieve a balance between feminine and masculine features (preference for gender expression that defies traditional binaries)
- dysphoria vs. expression or appearance: altering clothing, hairstyles or overall appearance is a common strategy to manage distress from dysphoric feelings
- dysphoria fluctuates based on situational, emotional and hormonal factors
- no solution: there was a sense of hopelessness in many responses, as ppl feel like no available treatment could adress their distress (bv. hormonal therapy: often enhance one gendered aspect at the expense of the desired androgynous or gender neutral presentation).
- trade-off or loss: challenge to choose between traditionally binary interventions, as any choice feels like a concession rather than a solution
4
Q
therefore we need new interventions that support physical androgyny or fluid gender expression: such as microdosing
