Lecture 6: Plant Body (Primary and Secondary Structures) Flashcards
Taproot system
one main thickest root
branches are thinner
fibrous root systen
many branches of equal or similar thickness
wide branching
short internodes
most likely to be bushy
narrow branching
long internodes
most likely to be tall and slender(man)
stomates
- modification of epidermal cells
- opening of them is controlled by hydrostatic pressure of guard cells
- they absorb water (guard cells turgid) during the day and open for gas exchange
- at night, the guard cells flaccid and the factory shuts down
stipules
green like structure that leaves are attached to stem by
- modified into tendrils or spines
Apical Meristem
- cause primary growth and increases the length of the shoot root
lateral meristem
PERMANENT
ex. cambium
- produce xylem towards inside and phloem towards outside (increase diameter)
temporary meristem
produce organs with finite size, such as leaf and flower parts
- they loose their meristem character when the organ reaches its full size
Root structure
cell division, elongation, maturation
stamen
anther + filament
carpel
stigma + style + ovary
