Lecture 6 - Gross Anatomy of the Circulatory Systems Flashcards
What is portal circulation?
Blood goes from arteries -> arterioles -> capillaries BUT THEN instead of going from capillaries to venules, it goes from capillaries -> portal vessel -> another capillary bed -> venules -> veins
Give one example of a portal circulatory system
Hepatic Portal System (between gastrointestinal tract and liver)
Give two functions of the lymphatic system
Mechanism for drainage of interstitial fluid
(Also involved in body’s defence mechanisms)
Which parts of the body drain to why lymph ducts?
Right side of head, neck, thorax, right upper limb all drain into Right Lymphatic Duct. Rest of body (left side of head, neck, thorax, upper limb, all of lower abdomen and both lower limbs) drains to Thoracic Duct.
Where do the two lymph ducts drain into?
The right lymphatic duct drains into the right subclavian vein; the thoracic duct drains into the left subclavian vein.
