Lecture 10 - Haematology III (Leukocytes) Flashcards
Name the 5 main types of White Blood Cell
Granulocytes: Neutrophils, Eosinophils, Basophils
Agranulocytes: Lymphocytes, Monocytes
Structural features of Monocytes?
Largest WBC, large kidney/horseshoe-shaped nucleus, extensive agranular cytoplasm, phagocytic
Structural features of Neutrophils?
Multiple-lobed nucleus (2-5), granular cytoplasm, phagocytic
Structural features of Lymphocytes?
Smallest WBC, no lobes (on nucleus), agranular cytoplasm
Structural features of Eosinophils?
Bilobular (“sunglasses”) nucleus, granular cytoplasm
Structural features of Basophils?
Bilobed “S-shaped” nucleus, granular (heparin + histamine) cytoplasm
Functions of Neutrophils
First line of defence (also major constituent of pus)
Functions of Eosinophils
Combat Parasitic Infections (also allergies + asthma)
Functions of Basophils
(Probably) Inflammatory Response (but not much known because they are least common)
Functions of Monocytes
Little function in blood - migrate out into tissues
IIFunctions of Lymphocytes
Central role in all immune mechanisms (also first line of defence for viral infections)
