what is burnout?
emotional exhaustion, depersonalization, and reduced sense of performance accomplishments
what is burnout within sport?
“A withdrawal (from sport) noted by a reduced sense of accomplishment, devaluation/resentment of sport, and physical/psychological exhaustion”
what are key characteristics of a reduced sense of performance accomplishment?
low feelings of achievement, internalisation of external media, not playing to their potential, feelings of being unable to continue high-level performance
what are the key characteristics of sport devaluation?
not focussed on performance, relief at the end of the season ,loss of enthusiasm, doubts about career path
what are the key characteristics of physical and emotional exhaustion?
inability to motivate self, moody, too tired to do things outside of sport, lethargic, longer recovery periods
what are key attributions?
comp transition, pressure to comply with demands, heavy training and playing load, injury, comp environment
how can we monitor burnout?
athlete burnout questionnaire (ABQ), Maslach burnout inventory and recovery stress questionnaire (RESTQ)
how do we monitor mood states?
profile of mood states
(POMS) and positive and negative affect schedule
(PANAS)
What is entrapment theory?
feel entrapped within their sport - no longer want to participate but feel they need to
what is the unidimensional identity dev and external control model?
identity is centred around one aspect and they have no control over their decisions
what is the neg-training stress response model?
Training puts a strain (stress) on an athlete physically and psychologically
This can be positive (periodised training and some overtraining has physiological benefits)
what is the cog-affective stress model?
sit demands, cog appraisal, physiological responses and beh responses
moderated by personality and motivational factors
what is perfectionism in burnout?
multidimensional personality disposition
what is the frost-multidimensional perfectionism scale
(MPS)
Concern of mistakes causes the highest one

Frost suggested that organisation is excluded when calculating total perfectionism scores because it is only loosely related to the other subscales
what are strategies to prevent burnout?
training environment which you can have fun, encourage multiple sport part, athlete to have autonomy
