lecture 1 - competitive anxiety Flashcards
what is somatic anxiety?
physical anxiety (sweating) and cog anxiety (doubts and fears)
what is multidimensional anxiety?
negative emotional state comprised of feelings of nervousness and worry, associated with the activation or arousal of the body
what is state anxiety?
temporary, ever changing emotional state of subjective, consciously perceived feelings of apprehension and tension, ANS e.g. finishing the rest of the lecture
what is trait anxiety?
behavioral disposition to perceive as threatening circumstances that are objectively not dangerous and to then respond with disproportionate state anxiety – mind realizes there’s a threat, e.g. if need to finish lecture doesn’t leave us with physical danger but may be embarrassed
what are the 3 components of anxiety?
mental, physical and behavioural
what are symptoms of somatic anxiety?
headaches, feeling ill, frequent need to urinate
what does the CSAI-2 measure?
cognitive anxiety, somatic anxiety and self-confidence
what did Hanton, Thomas and Maynard (2004) study?
82 male athletes from rugby, soccer and field hockey teams
Completed the CSAI-2 – 1 week prior, 2 days prior, 1 day prior, 2 hours prior and 30 minutes prior to exercise
Findings – confidence high 7 days prior, cog higher than somatic but relatively low until day before – cant sleep – thoughts going through brain
Everything changes until 30 mins before
what did Mabweazara (2017) study?
61 males swimmers completed the CSAI-2 1 hour before competing in a 50 m individual swimming event
Results – both cog and somatic anxiety predicted swimming performance – when both anxieties were elevated performance decreased
Somatic become dominant and significant predictor of performance
Sprints events may want to predominantly consider the effects of somatic anxiety, and interventions should reflect this
what is facilitative anxiety?
pos expectancies of ability to cope and goal attainment
what is debilitative anxiety?
neg expectancies of ability to cope and goal attainment
who did Hanton and Jones (1999) study?
CSAI-2 on 4 male swimmers interpreting debilitative and facilitative anxiety - interventions
team cohesion research - Eys (2003)
392 sub-elite athletes completed the CSAI-2 prior to match, split into facilitative and debilitative group and completed the GEQ - group environment questionnaire
what are the 4 dimensions of the GEQ?
GI-T - group integration - task
GI-S - group integration - social
ATG-T - individual attractions to the group - task
ATG-S - individual attractions to the group - social
what were the results of the team cohesion research?
athletes who perceived their cog anxiety as facilitative had higher perception of both ATG-T and GI-T
