Lecture 6 Flashcards
How are endocrine systems controlled?
By feedback loops
Where are the secretory products of the thyroid stored?
In colloid filled follicles
Two exocrine and two endocrine secretions of the pancreas
Exocrine: trysinogrn, amylase, lipase
Endocrine: glucagon from alpha cells and insulin from beta cells
Hormones if anterior and posterior pituitary
Anterior is thyroid stimulating hormone, fsh and lh
Posterior- adh
What does the hypothalamus control?
Mood, sleep patterns, plasma osmolality, thermoregulation, feeding, emotion
What is the other name for the pituitary?
The hypophysis
What is a portal system
One in which the blood passes through two sets of smaller vessels before returning to the heart
What is the function of the hypothalmo-hypophyseal portal system?
Allows quick exchange of hormones between anterior pituitary and hypothalamus
What cells in thyroid produce calcitonin?
Parafollicular cells
Is the adrenal gland endocrine or neuroendocrine?
It is both
What are chromaffin cells?
Cells of the adrenal medulla that arose from neurons and it is these cells that nerve fibres from the hypothalamus pass to. Chromaffin cells release catecholamines (Adrenaline and noradrenaline)
What does the adrenal cortex do?
Releases aldosterone which regulates blood pressure and plays a role in the fight or flight response
What is stress?
A real or perceived threat to homeostasis
What is neurocrine secretion?
When post synaptic neurons secrete into the blood stream
What are the two main components of pancreatic juice?
Bicarbonate to neutralise chyme and enzymes like trypsinogen and chymotrypsinogen
