How to tell eczema from a fungal infection?
Both can come in rings. However fungal infection will clear from the centre to form a ring
What are some main dermatology terms?
Small lump >5mm= papule (acne)
Larger lump (5-10mm)= nodule
Redness= erythema
Macule=non palpable area of discolouration
Patch= macule greater than 2cm
What is the timeframe that a medication is most likely to cause a rash in?
2 days to 2 weeks
What are the three main processes of inflammation?
Vasodilation
Increased micro vascular permeability
Influx of leukocytes
What is lichenification?
Thickening of skin with increased skin markings
Why do patients dislike steroids?
They thin the skin which patients don’t like however itching increases skin width so steroids compensate
Where is psoriasis commonly found?
Knees, elbows, scalp and lower back
What is malignant melanoma?
Type of skin cancer that can spread to other body organs. Men found on back and legs in women. Caused by over exposure to intense sunlight. Can also result from subbed exposure
What is vitiligo?
A long term condition that results in white patches on the skin caused by lack of melanin.
Non-segmental where patches symmetrical on both sides of body most common and is caused by T cells attack melanocytes (autoimmune)
Segmental vitiligo is where the patches only appear in one place but this is much rarer.
What is alopecia areata?
Condition where hair lost from some or all parts of body most commonly the scalp resulting in coin sized bald spots.
