Lecture 23 Flashcards
What are the two contrast media types?
Positive (looks black) eg barium, iodine
Negative (looks white) water, air, CO2
Ideal contrast?
Low osmolality and viscosity
High water solubility
Safe
Heat and chemical stability
Cost effective
Typical contrast half life?
30-60 mins
Contrast side effects?
Endothelial damage
Vasodilation
Vascular pain
What projection is best to see true heart size?
PA
Difference between proximal and distal?
Proximal close to centre of body, distal further from body centre
What body parts are particularly sensitive to radiation?
Lens of eye, gonads and thyroid
What is angiography?
Where arteries are injected with an x ray dye
What is diffusion imaging?
MRI where water movement is looked at. Can show up things a normal MRI wouldn’t
What is MR spectroscopy?
Added to MRI to see ions and protons. Can be used to measure chemical metabolism of suspected tumour
