what is an organization structure?
what an organization looks like in terms of department, groups size, functions, coordination, hierarchy and rules
what is a value chain?
a tool to determine is the organization is suitable for the proposed strategy. describes the basic proses from inbound logistics to service
what are the basic functionalities to make sure you can do the primary process of the organization?
- inbound logistics > raw materials ect
- operations > actual work happend here
- outbound logistics > transport, storage ect
- marketing, sales
- service > aftersales ect
what do you need to make the basic functionalities happen?
- firm infrastructure > buildings, finance ect.
- human resource > people who work
- technology
- procurement > raw materials
what are the 3 main dimensions you can use to classify the structure of an organization?
- departementalization
- centralization vs de-centralization
- formalization and standardization
what is departmentalization?
deviding up the organization
what two ways are there for departmentalizaiton? (often used together)
- funtional
- divisional
what is functional departmentalization?
splitting the organization according to a function (vb. marketing, finance, production)
what is divisonal departmentalization?
splitting the organization in different divisions based on, for example, different products an organization makes
what is centralized dicision making?
the decisions are made at the top (central) of the organization
what is de-centralized decision making?
people at the bottom of the organization also have something to say (bottom-up)
what is a tall structure for a organization? and what is a flat structure?
high span of control vs lower span of control
what is formalization?
there are explicit rules, procedures and policies for an individuals’ work behaviour
what is standardization?
uniformity of activities and rules
what are two extremes of organization structure?
- machine bureaucracy
- professionalism
what is a machine bureaucracy structure?
it’s all about control. centralized, formal and hierarchical
what is a professionalism structure?
it’s all about coordination. flexible, de-centralized, flat and informal
what is an organization culture about?
everything besides the structure and formal definition. shared values, beliefs, norms, practices
why is the organization culture important?
- culture works as a control strategy
- culture is important when the environment is uncertain
- culture is important when work is boring
what 3 control strategies do we know?
- market based > based on supply and demand
- bureaucracy > based on structure
- clan > based on shared beliefs and values
what does culture consist of?
- beliefs and values > unconsiously learned
- practices and norms > how we do things
what are the models of management?
a way of looking at an organization in terms of management
what demensions are there in the models of management?
- flexibility vs. control
- internal focus vs external focus
what 4 foccused of an organization are there in the models of management?
- rational goal model
- internal process model
