Lecture 6 Flashcards
What is concurrent training?
A training program where endurance training and strength training are done simultaneously - different from cross training.
What is cross training?
A training program where different modes of exercise are used to train the same aspect of fitness. Enhance endurance and strength at the same time.
What are the two different signalling pathways that strength and endurance training turn on?
Strength = hypertrophy = mTORC
Endurance = signalling = PGC-1alpha.
What is the problem with concurrent training?
May produce strength gains that are smaller than if strength training was done in isolation. Due to antagonism
What is antagonism?
The reduction in adaptations produced by the presence of multiple training stimuli.
What factors can influence concurrent interference?
- strength training time
- training volume
- athlete vs. non-athlete
- mode of endurance training.
- depends on timing of training.
What happens when mTOR and PGC-1a are both active?
They pathways interfere with one another when both are active- PGC-1a inhibits mTOR pathway and prevents protein synthesis and therefore hypertrophy.
When do interferences of concurrent training really kick in?
Chronic effects kick in after 5 weeks. This is when strength will start to decrease.
When you train strength and endurance on the same day, what happens?
Strength Interference.
When happens when you train strength and endurance on different days?
May be no interference.
What are some theories to why training on the same day is bad?
- acute fatigue
- glycogen depletion- interfer with mTOR signalling.
- effort rationing
- signalling interruption
- chronic fatigue
What is typically least affected by concurrent training?
VO2 max.
What is the effect of concurrent training on muscular power?
Decreases when combined with endurance.
What is synergism?
The phenomenon in which 2 or more discrete influences or agents acting together create an effect greater than that predicted by knowing only the separate effects of the individual agents.
Increased training adaptation when multiple training stimuli are present.
What happened when trained athletes underwent concurrent training? What does this show?
ST improved endurance due to positive neural adaptations- showed the benefit plyometrics.
