Lecture 5 (week 3) Flashcards
What is trajectory and how is it measured?
It’s lifespan, including growth, development and aging.
Measured in years, decades
What is rhythm and how is it measured?
Its the maintenance, repair and other processes.
Measured in Days, weeks, months
What is Homeostasis and how is it measured?
The maintenance of steady state.
Measured in seconds, minutes, hours.
What is energy and information flow, and how is it measured?
Action potentials and enzymatic reactions.
Measured in Milliseconds, microseconds
What is lifespan?
What is the lifespan of Canadian
Lifespan is how long we will live.
Lifespan Canada is 81 years
What is healthspan?
In Canada?
How long we will live a healthy, independant lifestyle.
Healthspan Canada 72 years
How do we track aging and disease processes?
Using biomarkers
What are biomarkers?
Indicators of the biological state of the organism
In infancy, what can slow growth mean?
Infectious disease, malnutrition, hormonal problems
In infancy, what can fast growth mean?
Hormonal problems, over-nutrition (would affect body weight)
When does height typically begin to decline and why?
What is the disease associated with this called?
Typically around 40 years old, caused by disk degeneration/compression.
The disease is called Kyphosis and it is curving of the spine due to osteoperosis
What is sarcopenia?
Age related loss of muscle mass
How do you prevent/reverse sarcopenia?
Focus on resistance training and protein intake
