Why is the femur more stable than the humerus?

A

The femur has a protruding condyle, which is fully surrounded and articulates with the hip joint, making it more stable, where as the humerus has a more flat structure allowing for more range of movement.

What are the 4 bone classes and their function?

A
  • Long bones - help with lever like movement (limbs) (mostly compact)
  • Short bones - help with shock absorption (mostly spongy/cancellous)
  • Flat bones - make up the cranium (protection of cranium) and also make up the scapula where muscle attachment occurs.
  • Irregular bones- don’t fit into any other category.
