What is the superior and inferior?
Superior is towards the top of your head (upwards), inferior is towards your feet (down).
What is medial and lateral?
Medial is towards the centre of your body, lateral is outwards from the centre of the body.
What is anterior and posterior?
Anterior is the front of your body (chest), posterior is the back of your body.
What is proximal and distal?
Proximal is towards the trunk of your body (shoulder), distal is further down the arm.
What is superficial and deep?
superficial is out towards the surface, deep is deeper towards the centre.
What is the sagittal, coronal and transverse planes?
Sagittal cuts vertically down the centre of the body, coronal cuts from left to right vertically across the body and transverse cuts horizontally across the centre of the body.
What is flexion and extension?
Flexion is bring the fleshy parts of a limb closer together, extension is distancing the fleshy parts of a limb.
What is dorsiflexion and plantarflexion?
Dorsiflexion is to raise your ankle, plantarflexion is to lower your ankle and ‘plant’ your toes into the ground.
What is adduction and abduction?
Adduction is to move limbs towards the midline, abduction is to move limbs away from the midline.
What is circumduction?
Circumduction is the combination of flexion, extension, adduction and abduction.
What is rotation?
Rotation is the rotation of a joint around a fixed axis.
What is pronation and supination?
Pronation is to flip the wrist so that the palm is facing the ground, supination is to flip the wrist so that the palm is facing upwards.
What is inversion and eversion?
Inversion is to move the feet in towards each other, eversion is to move the feet out away from each other.
