Lecture 5 Flashcards
1
Q
Differential reproduction
A
individuals of some genotypes have more offspring than others
2
Q
3 fundamental observable facts of natural selection
A
- VARIATION
- lots within/between species - INHERITANCE
- variation passed from parents to offspring - OVERPRODUCTION
- more offspring born then that survive to adulthood
3
Q
Fitness/RS
A
ability to reproduce successfully compared to other members of the same species
Low fitness = low RS
High fitness = high RS
4
Q
Altruism
A
Behaviour that benefits recipient at a cost to the donor/altruist. Selfless behaviour of the donor/altruist
5
Q
What is the problem with altruism and group selection?
A
- natural selection acts on the group rather than the individual
- altruist acts done for the “good of the group”
6
Q
What is required for group selection to work?
A
-groups with altruists
7
Q
How does altruism evolve?
A
Kin Selection
8
Q
Kin Selection
A
- blood is thicker than water
- individuals share genetic material with relatives
- even if you never reproduce, its possible to still have some of your genes represented in the next generation
