Current organisations can use 3 forms of strategic development to adapt to the development
Defenders: rely on stable set of customers and products(blackberry)
prospectors: takes advantage of new markets and products.( general electrics that also have a bank)
Analyzers: Carefully searching for new products and market opportunities, at the same time they are being protective towards current products and customers.(Windows lauched phones and operating systems for phones, at the same time as they are in the computermarket)
5 Marketsegments for organisations:
- Innovators (Apple)
- Early adopters- Google(android operating systems)
- Early majority- Windows
- Late majority- Nokia
- Laggards(Blackberry)
5 factors that effect the spread
- Releative advantage: improvement compared to the last generation
- Compability: ease of assimilation into daily life
- Complexity: Ease of utilization
- Trialability: Ease of experimentation
- Observability: Visibilty to others
to modes of market orientation:
Proactive: attempts to discover understand and satisfy the needs of customers
Resposive: Focus on satifying existing needs of customers
Resolving innovators dilemma
- Companies develop conflicting resources and capacity to succeed in appealing to a wide range of customers
- Companies must be proactive in seeking insight into innovation through market research
Incubment firms often fail to keep up with the pace of distruptive innovations:
- Not because they unawere of the existience of innovations
- Because the structure of the organization does not allow development
3 main reasons why incumbent firms cannot adapt to distruptive innovations:
- Outdated, and /or political managment style
- rigid organizational culture and/ or tall organizational hierarchies
- unwanted performance and resource dependant on sustaining the innovation
