Lecture 4 - Environmental and Social Group Effects on Animal Welfare Flashcards
What is the minimum cage floor area for birds
550cmsq
What are pullets
Young hen (about 16 week
When is the sexual maturity for hen
17-18 weeks
What is the mortality in the rearing phase

What are the type of hen farming environment
Free range, Free range, Eco free range, Barn
What is the number of hen in a hectare
1500
What are the benefit for layer han(conventional cage system)
Easier food hygiene Even bird weight less cannibalism Less feather pecking bio security
What kind of animals are suitable for domestication
Flexible Diet
Reasonably fast growth
Ability to breed in managed environment
Tractable deposition (non-aggressive to people or animal)
Temperament which makes it unlikely to panic
Respect a social hierarchy
What happens when the social group is very small
There will be a lack of social hierarchy and it might be harder to manage
What happens when the social hierarchy is too large
It will be too large for them to recognise the social hierarchy due to the large numbers of animals in one place
What does unnatural social group mean
human intervention (removing wean cows to milk the parents) Separating the genders
What is Buller Steer syndrome? (Steer are castrated male cattle)
1 of the steer maybe targeted, penned riders, they will get mounted, may get aggressive or sexual behaviour due to hormonal abnormality. Buller is the ridden by their pen mates (usually in small areas)
What are another problem with social group problems
Cannibalism (increase when given more space for birds), therefore free range need a high level of care.
Tail biting in pigs (occur more in indoor)
