Lecture 4: Anatomical Terminology Flashcards
What is the anatomical position?
- Upright
- Face forwards
- Feet together
- Palms face forwards
What are top/upper and down/bottom in anatomical terminology?
Superior and inferior.
What is the term for ‘closer to the middle’?
Median
What is the term for ‘further out from the middle’?
Lateral
What is anterior?
Nearer the front.
What is posterior?
Nearer the back.
What does proximal mean?
Nearer to the point of attachment (on a limb).
What is the term for ‘situated away from the point of attachment’ in a limb?
Distal.
What is term for ‘closer to the surface’?
Superficial
What does deep mean in anatomical terms?
Further from the surface.
What is the sagittal plane?
The plane that separates the left side of the body from the right.
What is the coronal plane?
The plane that separates the front side of the body from the back.
What is the plane that separates the front side of the body from the back.
The coronal plane.
What is the plane that separates the left side of the body from the right?
The sagittal plane.
What is the tranverse plane?
The plane that separates the top half of the body from the bottom.
What is the plane that separates the top half of the body from the bottom?
The transverse plane.
What is flexion?
Angular movement which decreases the angle of a limb from its anatomical position.
Fleshy parts of limb brought closer together.
What is angular movement which decreases the angle of a limb from its anatomical position called?
Flexion
What is it called when the fleshy parts of limb are brought closer together?
Flexion
What is extension?
Angular movement which increases the angle of a limb from its anatomical position.
Fleshy parts of limb brought further away.
What is angular movement which increases the angle of a limb from its anatomical position called?
Extension
What is it called when the fleshy parts of limb are moved further away from each other in an angular movement?
Extension
What is dorsiflexion?
Toes brought up towards face.
What is it called when toes are brought up towards face.
Dorsiflexion
What is plantarflexion?
Toes pointing towards the ground.
What is it called when the toes are pointing towards the ground?
Plantarflexion
What is abduction in anatomical terms?
Movement at joint moves limb away from midline.
What is adduction in anatomical terms?
Movement at joint moves limb towards midline.
What is circumduction?
- Flexion/abduction/extension/
adduction - NO rotation
What is circumduction in anatomical terms?
Rotation around the long axis of a joint.
What are the two types of rotation?
Lateral/external
Medial/internal
What is pronation?
Palm faces posterior.
What is supination?
Palm faces anterior and forearm bones parallel.
What is inversion?
Sole of foot faces the midline.
What is eversion?
Sole of foot turns away from the midline.
What is another name for the coronal plane?
The frontal plane.
