When would children start to struggle and show symptoms of neurodevelopmental disorders?
start to struggle between the age of 5-12, but many will not be diagnosed until adulthood (especially females)
What is an Intellectual Disability?
IQ below 70
- challenges with adaptive functioning skills –> knowing it is important to keep themselves safe, engaged with the community, lack of survival skills
What is a learning disorder?
can have any IQ
often perform worse on a task than you would expect in relation to their IQ, specific to different types of learning
What is autism spectrum disorders?
- different communication styles
- repeated behaviours
What is ADHD factors?
- attention
- hyper activity
What is Oppositional Defiant Disorder? (ODD)
kids who refuse to listen to instructions by an authority figure, can appear angry
What is conduct disorder? (CD)
children violating social norms
- skipping school
- aggressive
- damaging
- truant from school
- often gets involved in drugs and alcohol at a young age
What is psychoeducation?
this is providing education on what disorders are, what they look like and what can be done to help them
- young people often do not have the power to change their environment so you have to include family in the treatment process
