What is psychosis and it’s features?
- focus on your perception of reality
- difficulties in distinguishing what is real and what is not
- high levels of distress
What are some causes of psychosis?
- phycological disorders
- major stress
- drug use
What is schizophrenia?
2 or more of
- delusions
- hallucinations
- disorganised speech
- catatonia
- negative symptoms –> reduced experience of emotion
What are the causes of schizophrenia?
- brain disorder due to either predisposing factors, or environment causes
- birth month (sickness)
- pregnancy or birth complications
What are some treatments for schizophrenia?
- anti-psychotic medication, although this is relatively effective, it does have significant side effects side effects
- CBT, focusing on how clients attribute their behaviors, and challenging delusional beliefs
What is a positive cluster of symptoms?
people are experiencing emotions that are typically above what we would typically expect in the population
What is a negative cluster of symptoms?
people are having experiences that are below what we typically see, lack of emotion
What is a cluster of disorganised symptoms?
talking about things that do not make any sense
How does culture impact schizophrenia treatment?
Different cultures understand and interpret psychosis as some view it as an illness that needs to be fixed and controlled, whereas some cultures view it as a gift and a method with those in other universes, religious and spiritual reasonings for their symptoms
What is a bizarre delusion?
having thought that cannot realistically happen
what is a persecutory delusion?
believing that a person or person of authority is out to get them
What is a nihilistic delusion?
not having a belief that the world has values
what is a referential delusion?
being communicated through objects
