What is anxiety?
Anxiety is the thoughts, feelings, sensations you experience about something that is going to happen in the future, we are anticipating that there is going to be a threat to our system and that we are not going to be able to cope in a particular situation
- future focused
- an anticipated threat
What is fear or panic?
- present focused
- an immediate threat
- automatic
What are the cognitive components of anxiety?
- thoughts
- worries
What are the physiological components of anxiety?
- heart (racing)
- stomach (slowed digestion)
- sweating
What are the behavioural components of anxiety?
- avoidance
What is the fight or flight response?
this is an automatic response to a threat and happens in the sympathetic nervous system, which results in heart racing and slowed digestion, which would be helpful in past generations danger but less helpful in the current context
What are the causes of an anxiety disorder?
- learning process (do not give yourself the opportunity to learn about danger, focus on what others are anxious about)
- cognitive (what thoughts we grab onto)
- genetics
- neurobiology (how our brains are wired)
- personality and temperament
What is Separation Anxiety?
fear caused by the idea or event of being separated from a certain place or attachment figure
What is Generalisation Anxiety Disorder?
a continuous feeling or worry or anxiety, people feel as if they have no control and are often worried about multiple things
