What is psychopathology?
the study of psychological disorders
How has the history of psychopathology impacted how we view it now?
people with disorders used to be treated very bad, lots of stigma around them, which can cause future generations to have fear and precautions around getting help
How does culture play an impact on how psychopathology?
- cultural difference in NZ talks and approaches emotions differently
- we need to think about who is sitting in front of us, and how we are going to provide treatment and the right care specifically for them
- there are different understandings of mental health between cultures and generations
What are the aims of the ‘Te Rau Hinengaro: The New Zealand Mental Health Survey’?
- to better understand the prevalence of rates for major mental health disorders
- to understand barriers to health care use
- to understand disability associated with disorder
- to understand mental health needs in understudied populations
What was the method of the ‘Te Rau Hinengaro: The New Zealand Mental Health Survey’?
- conducted 12,992 interviews with adults over the age of 16 (oversampled Māori and Pacific people)
- diagnosis were assigned based on the response to the questions
- some people do not want to accept that they have a mental disorder
What are the findings of the ‘Te Rau Hinengaro: The New Zealand Mental Health Survey’?
- life time prevalence data –> 40% met the criteria for one disorder
- health service use –> 60% of those with a serious disorder used health services in the last 12 months, Māori and Pacific People are less likely to have access
- differences in disorder rates for: young people, people with lower social economic status
What are some inequalities in NZ faced by Māori and Pasific in the health system?
there are many barriers of them accessing health care, the level of treatment and care they receive, need to deal with racism

What is a disorder?
a disorder is a condition that disrupts normal physical or mental functioning, often leading to distress, impairment or difficulty in daily activities. it typically involves a set of symptoms or behaviors that deviate from the norm, impacting an individual’s wellbeing, thoughts, emotions or behaviours
