What is the biomedical approach?
sees something as a disease which has a known cause and impact on how particular system works, change in physical functioning, often treated through medication and possibly surgery
What is the psychological approach?
thinks about the behaviour and what the causes are and addressing them instead, equipping people with skills to help them by changing how they interact with their thoughts and feelings
What is psychodynamic treatment?
aim is to help clients achieve insight, wanted to help you access the subconscious things happening in your body that was causing the behaviours that you were not aware of (dreams and free association)
- has a strong focus on the past
What is behavioural treatment?
aim is to get clients to identify that behaviours are the cause of disorder, focuses more on reinforcement rather than punishment
What is cognitive treatment?
aim is for clients to identify and address maladaptive thoughts, beliefs and assumptions, works with people to re-shape their negative thoughts
What are the key features of personality disorders?
- difficulties in social interactions
- intense (or reduced) emotional and behavioural reactions
- inflexible thinking patterns
- impulsive behaviours
What is Cluster A personality disorders?
Odd or eccentric
- paranoid personality disorder
- schizoid personality disorder
- schizotypal personality disorder

dramatic
- anti-social personality disorders

anxious

What are some of the causes of personality disorders?
- genetics
- childhood experiences
- individual temperament
What are some possible treatments for personality disorders?
- focus on treating the symptoms
- schema therapy
- adaptations to treatment pathways
What are some difficulties with treatment?
- takes longer
- therapy is difficult
- poor research base
- high levels of stigma
What is paranoid personality disorder?
- person is overly distrustful, feels as if people are out to get them
What is schizoid personality disorder?
- person shows little interest in others and avoids social relations
What is schizotypal personality disorder?
- person has unusual thoughts, behaviours and perceptions, often has magical thinking and believing impossible things
What is anti-social personality disorder?
- person is harmful and does not take into consideration the rights and safety of others, does not show much remorse, and struggles with empathy
What is borderline personality disorder?
- person will have intense emotions, unstable relationships and a distorted self-image
What is histrionic personality disorder?
- person has a strong need for attention and reassurance
- attention seeker to the extreme
What is narcissistic personality disorder?
- person has an inflated sense of their own importance, believe they are unique and therefore better than others
What is avoidant personality disorder?
- person is shy and fearful and often avoids uncomfortable situations
What is dependent personality disorder?
- person has an excessive need to be taken care of, struggle to be independent
What is obsessive compulsive personality disorder?
OCD
- person is overly focus on order, perfection and control
