Lecture 3.1 Flashcards
What is clinical neuropsychology?
It is a science that attempts to explain normal brain behaviour by assessing damage in others
What is Broca’s area?
Ares of the brain responsible for expressive language, in the front left hemisphere below the silvian fissure
Speech is slow and non fluent
What is Wernicke’s area?
Area of the brain that is inf ront of the sylvian fissure that is lesioned, are unable to comprehend the meaning of words, speech is fluent, no problem finding the words to use, however those words don’t make sense and these patients are unaware they are speaking gibberish
What are some structural brain imaging techniques?
CT scan- series of 2D images in 3D space, shows tissues of different densities absorb different X ray amounts, dont differentiate between grey and white matter well
MRI- magnetic imaging, high spatial resolution, can differ grey and white matter well
What are some functional imaging techniques?
EEG- measure electrical signal by electrodes, good temporal resolution, poor spatial resolution
ERP- shows electrical activity in a region when a stimulus is provided, good temporal and poor spatial resolutions
fMRI- measures activity of changes in oxygenated blood in the brain, good spatial resolution
What is a magnetic stimulation imaging technique?
TMS- transcranial magnetic stimulation,
A current acts as a temporary lesion disrupting the tissue
Effect is short shows brain areas that are and are not being used with the lesion
