Lecture 11.1 Flashcards
What are the 2 divisions of LTM?
Declarative and Non-declarative
What is Declarative memory?
Knowledge that can be consciously recalled, Hippocamppi dependent
Further broken down into 2 other categories
What are the other categories of Declarative memory and who thought this? (2)
Episodic and Semantic
Proposed by Tulving
What is non-declarative memory?
Knowledge that is unconsciously recalled and is non hippocampal dependent
Example/. Motor skills
What are the other categories of non declarative memory (4)
Procedural memory
Priming (Repetition and Association)- ability to identify stimulus as the result of previous exposure
Classical Conditioning
Operant Conditioning
What happened to HM?
Removal of his medial temporal lobe and hippocampi to treat epilepsy
He acquired an inability to acquire new information
What was he like after surgery?
Normal working memory
Temporally graded anterograde amnesia
Unable to learn new semantic facts
What can we conclude from HM?
That declarative memory is not stored in the MTL
and the MTL is critical for consolidation of new information
