Lecture 2.1 Flashcards
What is myasthenia Gravis and what are some symptoms?
Muscle weakness that causes fatigue, problems chewing, talking weakness
The conduction of nerve messages are normal, but the immune system destroys ACh receptors
What are the 3 types of synapses?
Axodendritic- terminal synapses with dendrite
Axosomatic- Terminal synapses with cell body
Axoaxonic- Terminal synapses with axon
What are some possiblities for neurontransmitter re-uptake?
Re-uptake by transporter molecules and dec-activation of Ach by Achetylchoinesterases
What are the 4 classes of small molecule neurotransmitters and give examples
Amino acids- Glutamate and GABA
Monoamines- Dopamine, Serotonin, NA
Soluble Gases
Ach
What is an agonist and give examples?
Something that increases the activity of the drug
L-Dope increases dopamine
Nicotine increases ACH receptors
What is an antagonist and give examples
Something that decrease the activity of a drug
PCPA decreases seratonin
Botulin toxin blocks ACh release
