lecture 3 - introduction to proteins Flashcards
Are proteins branching or non-branching polymers?
Non-branching
Are proteins polymeric or non-polymeric?
Polymeric
What is the size of an Å?
1e-10 metres
What are the bonds that join amino acids in a polypeptide?
peptide bonds
What type of protein is insulin?
cell signal/hormone
What is trypsin?
A digestive enzyme that breaks down proteins (protease)
What is the name for digestive protein that breaks down proteins?
Protease
What is amylase?
An enzyme that that breaks down starch into sugar
What is the function of hexokinase?
It is an enzyme that adds a phosphate to glucose, in metabolic processes
What is a kinase?
An enzyme (protein) that adds phosphate groups to molecules
What is the function of haemoglobin?
Binds to oxygen in the lungs and carries it in the blood to tissues for use in metabolism
What is HIV protease?
A protein made by the HIV virus that is involved in its replication
What are antibodies?
A type of protein that bind to cellular invades to help the body eliminate infection
What is DNA polymerase?
Protein that binds to one strand of DNA and adds the complementary strand to it
What is RNA polymerase?
Protein that is used for replication and maintenance of RNA
