Lecture 3: Climate Change, Vet Med, & One Health (Exam 1) Flashcards
What are the faces of climate change we see
- Shrinking ice sheets in greenland & Antarctica by satellite analysis
- Declining arctic sea ice
- Rising ocean levels
- Glacial retreat in the alps, himalayas, andes, rockies, alaska, & africa
- Coral bleaching
What was the hottest year on record (highest in 125,000 years)
2024
Which two countries contribute 40% of CO2 emissions
US & China
What is one of the most mobile forms of carbon
CO2 (carbon dioxide)
What is carbon sequestration
- Taking carbon out of the air & taking it into a system where it doesn’t get recycled
- Pull excess carbon out of & takes it out of the system
Explain greenhouse gases
- Act just like the glass of a green house
- The heat of the sun comes in through the atmosphere but then is absorbed & re-emitted in all directions by greenhouse gas molecules
- Not all incoming heat is outgoing
- Some heat is trapped w/in the lower atmosphere & warm the earth’s surface
- The higher the concentration of green house gases in the atmosphere the more heat is trappped
how much of GHG are going into the atmosphere per year
51 billion tons (gigatons)
Define climate
The long-term prevailing pattern of temp, precipitation, & other weather variables @ given location, described by statistics, such as means & extremes
Define weather
The environmental conditions that we experience outside every day over a smaller, regional area
How does the international panel on climate change describe the climate change
Adjustment in natural or human systems in response to actual or expected climatic stimuli or their effects, which moderates harm or exploits beneficial opportunities
List some adaptations to climate change
- Biological
- Physical/technological
- Economic
- Societal/cultural
- Legal/policy
- Systems
- Economic
Bovine generation time: 500 generations = how many years
1000 years
Human generation time: 500 generations = how many years
10,000 years
(higher/lower) life forms will be able to adapt through natural selection faster than (higher/lower) level life forms
Lower; Higher
T/F: We will be able to naturally evolve a biological solution
False we will not be able to
Describe genomics
- Applying the tech of genetics & molecular biology to the genetic mapping & DNA sequencing of sets of genes or the complete genomes of selected organisms with organizing the results in databases & with applications of the data
- Can help evolving/adapting to climate change
What will we see economically due to climate change
- Trade restrictions
- Increase in insurance cost
- More incentives
- Stock market fluctuations
- Property values (costal areas decrease b/c of more hurricanes)
- Job loss & creation
What is the general consensus of the overall effect of climate change
It will be negative
What will we see from a societal standpoint b/c of climate change
- Job loss & creation
- Climate poverty pockets
- Climate boom pockets
- Population shifts
- Political shifts (democratic or non-democratic or terror)
- Mass migration
How much (%) did the population of Ireland fall during the irish potato famine (1845-1852)
20 to 25%
How many people fled from the region during the dust bowl (1934 - 1937) & what % of the population moved to cali
- 2.5 million fled
- 10% moved to cali
What % of the electricity source comes from hydrocarbon fuels
62%
