making decisions according to the ethical value of something because it seems worth pursuing

society is adopting more of an instrumental rationality mindset
what is grade inflation?
rise in average grades assigned to students

what are the four principles of feminism?
- focuses on patriarchy
- male domination and female subordination caused by society

what is interest convergence?
when the interests of marginalized groups are taken into consideration by the dominant group only when it satisfies their own interest
what does intersectional mean?
reasons for discrimination based on gender, race etc intersect and create a unique circumstance

when the effect of one variable depends on the other
what is culture?
when non-material and material aspects come together to form a way of life

refers to the tangible aspects of culture
what is non-material culture?
refers to the non-tangible aspects of culture
what are symbols?
something that carries a specific meaning and is understood by a certain group of people
what are values?
standards people use to decide what is good or bad and guide the way one lives
what are norms?
societal expectations of people’s behaviour
what are folkways?
informal rules that guide behaviour
what are mores?
more formal rules that guide behaviour

something that is avoided because it is seen as gross like cannibalism

skepticism of the way society works

the idea that culture is everywhere

when it is hard to distinguish between reality and the representation of reality
