what is cognitive dissonance?
discomfort caused when personal beliefs do not alight with reality
what two general principles does the sociological imagination include?
- Seeing the general in the particular
- seeing the strange in the familiar
what is decline bias?
after comparing the present to the past, if we change the present, it will lead to problems
what does being objective mean?
basing conclusions on empirical evidence
what is social location bias?
when your “location” in a society like your class, race, gender, religion, or age influences the way you see the world
what is anecdote evidence?
personal evidence
What is sociology?
The study of how to view things sociologically
What is the biological explanation to teen depression?
Biological effects like hormone changes and sexual maturation
What is the individual explanation for teen depression?
Something individually or personally happening to a teen like a toxic household causing one to have depression
What is a sociological explanation?
Explanation with the focus on the significance of societal factors on a situation
what is confirmation bias?
tendency to find information consistent with our own beliefs
what is fundamental attribution error?
tendency to view someone’s failure because of something personally wrong with that person
what is self-serving bias?
tendency to think your own failure is due to external factors
what is optimism bias?
tendency to view things positively when you are in a good mood
what is pessimism bias?
tendency to view things negatively when you are in a bad mood
