Lecture 29: Biogeography & Humans Flashcards
Define endemic
restricted to a specific geographic area
ex: Hawaiian Drosophilia
Define cosmopolitan
world-wide distribution
ex: Humans
Define disjunct
found in two or more distinct areas
Define vicariance
a splitting event separating gene pools, the splitting of a species range
Define dispersal
movement of individuals from one area to another
What are biogeographic realms?
Regions with distinct Biotas, indicate a unique evolutionary history for that realms
What is Wallace’s Line?
Distinct break in the faunas between the Oriental and the Australian Biogeographic zone
What is the index of similarity?
C = Number of species shared/ N1 = Number of species in area 1
Define phylogeography
studying biogeography using phylogenies
What are races of humans?
geographic populations
What is the African replacement model?
a group from Africa replaced all other lineages
What is the hybridization and assimilation model?
a group from Africa replaced all other lineages with a couple of other lineages sneaking in
What is the multiregional evolution model?
different lineages intermixed
What is the centers of origin?
- the location of greatest number of species
- the location of greatest concentration of individuals
- etc
