Lecture 27: Lower Limb Compartments Flashcards
Muscles that move the thigh cross what?
The hip joint
Muscles the move the leg cross what?
The knee joint
Muscles that move the foot cross what?
The ankle joint
The anterior group that connects the pelvic girdle to the thigh include what muscle? Where does it originate from and where does it insert onto?
Ilioposas: Originates from the hip bone and inserts onto the femur
Discuss the iliacus and silis major
Iliacus oriinates from the ilium
Silis major originates from vertebrae of lower spine
Come together to insert onto the trochanter
Powerful flexor at thigh and hip joint – essential for running and walking
What is the muscle in the posterior portion connecting the pelvic girdle to the thigh?
The gluteal maximus
Where does the gluteal maximus originate from and insert onto. What is it’s functon?
Originates from the iliac crest and sacrum and coccyx
Inserts on the lateral side of the posterior surface of the femur, on the glutimal tuberosity
When it contracts it extends the thigh and results in lateral movement of the femur and hip joint
The thigh is separated into what three compartments?
Anterior, posterior and medial
The anterior compartment of the thigh contains a muscle that does what?
Flexes the thigh at the hip and extends the leg at the knee
The posterior compartment of the thigh contains a muscle that does what?
Extend the thigh at the hip and flex the leg at the knee
The medial compartment of the thigh contains a muscle that does what?
Adduct the thigh
The quadriceps femorus are found where?
The thigh
Where do the quadriceps originate and insert onto? What is it’s function
Originates from the hip bone (backside) and inserts onto the pataella. Extends the leg at the knee
What compartment are the hamstrings located in?
The posterior compartment of the thigh
Where do the hamstrings originate from, insert onto, and what is their function?
Originates from the ischil tuberosity and inserts onto the medial and posterior surface of proximal tibia and the lateral side of the head of the fibula
Crosses the hip joint on proximal end and crosses the knee joint on distal end
- Extends the thigh at the hip
- Extends the leg at the knee joint
Where do the muscles in the medial compartment originate from? Where do they insert onto? What is their function?
- Originates form the anterior surface of the pubic bone
- Inserts onto the posterior surface of the femur
- Thigh adduction
