A antigen
What blood group antigen is galactose
B antigen
What blood group has a non-functional allele
O antigen
What antigens are co-dominant
A and B
What antigen is recessive
O
If someone is blood group A what antibodies would they have
Antibodies against B
If someone is blood group B what antibodies do they have
Antibodies against A
If someone is blood group O what antibodies do they have
Antibodies against A and B
If someone is blood group AB what antibodies do they have
They have no antibodies against A and B
What is Rhesus Disease
This is when a RhD negative mother is pregnant with a RhD positive child and will need transfusion as they ca make anti-D and cause haemolytic disease of the new born
What is the purpose of the Direct Coombs test
The direct Coombs test is used clinically when immune-mediated hemolytic anaemia (antibody-mediated destruction of RBCs) is suspected
What is the purpose of the Indirect Coombs test
It is used to detect very low concentrations of antibodies present in a patient’s plasma/serum prior to a blood transfusion
