Role of Nutrition in Exercise/Sport

Purpose of a Nutrition Assessment
to collect and interpret relevant client info to see if athlete is at risk for malnutrition, the potential to positively influence sport performance through dietary changes, gives you evidence you need to know how to care for the athlete you’re working with
Malnutrition
when the body’s requirements for one or more essential nutrients is not met
Causes of malnutrition
- inadequate/unbalanced diet
- problems with digestion/absorption
- certain medical conditions
- starvation
At the end of the nutrition assessment what must you be able to say?
- what the athlete’s specific nutrition-related concerns are
- why you know these are concerns (your evidence)
- what you need to do to correct/optimize the athlete’s nutritional health
Elements of Nutrition Assessment for Athletes
- personal health and social history
- dietary assessment
- body weight and composition assessment (assessment of energy expenditure and fitness assessment)
Goal of the personal health and social history of the NA
to determine a client’s level of health risk
key elements: name, age, height, weight, gender, family and personal history of disease/health concerns, history of illness and injuries, surgical history, menstrual history, medication and supplement use
What do you want to find out when you ask about social history?
- SES, social and medical support, cultural and religious beliefs, housing situation, others in their CofC, age, role in family
- helps you understand how the athlete lives and the support they have
24 hr recall
- includes foods and quantities eaten, eating habits, accessibility of food and cultural and SES factors that affect selection of food
- want to know portion sizes, brand names, and eating times
Food Record/Diary
- athlete writes down everything they eat/drink for as many days as needed
- the more days the more accurate
Food Frequency Questionnaire
- gives an overview of a person’s diet
- identifies low/high intake of nutrients
- a good cross-check of other methods
