where and when did the first alphabet occur?
occurred in Sumer about 5600 thousand years ago.
what was the alphabet called, and why was it formed?
it was called cuneiform, and was formed so that they could facilitate agricultural trade.
because of the trade happening, what did it mean for language?
it meant that language was no longer local, and eventually became more uniform.
who was gutenberg, and what did he revolutionize?
he created the printing press, and made it possible change the words being printed.
what were some of the first printed books about, and who printed them?
the first printed books were mainly religious texts, and were hand printed by monks.
who were the people reading the books being printed before the printing press became popular?
royalty, religious leaders, aristocrats, and wealthy people in general.
who was martin luther?
he was a catholic priest who published his “95 theses” complaints against the church. his publication was a major contributor to the protestant revolution.
how did the printing press impact science?
it allowed for scientists and astronomers to republish the work of late philosophers/ scientific thinkers and break new ground based on what others were publishing based on their findings.
who was francis bacon?
he came up with the scientific method and published it at the height of the printing press’s popularity.
what is the age of reason?
the impact of printing/ printed material spurred enlightenment, and kickstarted revolutions in france and the united states.
what were the first forms of paper?
clay tablets, papyrus, and parchment paper.
