what is ethos?
“etho” or ethical appeal comes from the greek word “ethikos”, meaning character. it reflects credibility or an ethical appeal which convinces an audience through the authority or credibility of the persuader.
what is pathos?
“patho” derived from “path”, connotes emotion in greek language. using pathos means evoking emotions to gain approval from her audience.
what is logos?r
“logoi” signifies reason or logic. this logical argument approach relies on rationality where you use facts to convince listeners.
how did motion pictures come about in hollywood?
in 1873, the former governor of california, leland stanford, was convinced that when a horse was at full gallop, all four hooves would be off the ground. he hired famous british photographer, eadweard muybridge, to help him.
how did muybridge help stanford to prove his point.
in 1877, he set up a series of cameras on a racetrack in pall alto california. as the horse sprinted by, the cameras captured the horse in slow motion through pictures.
what did muybridge invent as a result of helping stanford?
he invented the zoopraxiscope to take pictures of animals and people and study their motion.
how was the kinetograph developed?
muybridge met eddison in 1888, and eddison saw the potential of the zoopraxiscope. he told his intern, william dickinson to develop a better projector, but he decided that it wasn’t a problem of projection but rather filming.
where was the first motion picture studio built?
it was built in new jersey, near eddison’s laboratory. it was called the black maria.
who were the lumiere brothers?
they were among the first film makers. they produced film making equipment, and eventually went on to sit ppl in the dark to watch movies. these movies were short, and showed ppl doing mundane activities.
who kick started the narrative movie idea?
french filmmaker, george melies, started telling stories by film. his most famous was “a trip to the moon”
who was edwin porter?
he worked as a camera operator at eddison’s movie house, and wanted to make his own narrative movie. he made “the great train robbery”.
why was “the great train robbery so important”?
it was the first movie to use editing, first western, and the first to use montage.
