Lecture 18 - Linear Momentum Flashcards
1
Q
what is linear momentum?
A
- the mass of an object multiplied by its velocity
- M = mv
2
Q
how is force related to linear momentum?
A
- force is the time rate of change of linear momentum
3
Q
what is linear impulse?
A
- a quantity of force times time
- a vector
4
Q
how do we change direction while performing activities?
A
- change the angle of push (direction of momentum)
- larger force is required at higher momentum
- length of vector also matters
5
Q
how does linear mass change with respect to impulse?
A
- the linear impulse remains the same
- mass x velocity (so if the ball is isolated, velocity is higher, once caught, velocity decreases because mass is increased)
