Lecture 15 - The Trunk and Torso Flashcards
what are the 3 arches in the foot?
- medial longitudinal arch
- lateral longitudinal arch
- transverse arch
what is it called when your pinky toe doesn’t touch the floor during regular standing?
- forefoot valgus
what is it called when your big toe doesn’t touch the floor during regular standing?
- forefoot varus
what is varus alignment?
- abnormal
- distal segment is rotated too far medially
what is valgus alignment?
- abnormal
- distal segment is rotated too far laterally
what is torsion alignment?
- abnormal
- bone proximal to the joint is twisted on the transverse plane (knees in or out)
- common in cerebral palsy, treated with bracing
what is regular spinal alignment?
- cervical = 7 = lordosis
- thoracic = 12 = kyphosis
- lumbar = 5 = lordosis
why does the spine naturally curve?
- shock absorption
- acts as a spring
what happens if you have excessive lordosis?
- posterior loading is excessive
- will cause lower back problems
what happens if you have excessive kyphosis?
- upper back problems
- bad for breathing
what happens if your spine is not regularly aligned?
- squeeze the intervertebral discs
- results in a bulge or potential rupture
- this is painful
what happens to the cervical spine with whiplash?
- loss of natural cervical lordosis (due to anterior spasm)
why do you hold our breath when lifting heavy weights?
- to keep the torso stable and cause a rigid body
- this takes the load off of the spine
what muscles help stabilize the spine? (11)
- rectus abdominus
- external oblique
- internal oblique
- psoas
- serratus posterior
- levators
- transversospinalis
- interspinalis
- intertransversarii
- erector spinae
- quadratus lumborum
why is anterior/posterior tilt bad?
- puts stress on the muscles
- weakens the muscles
- can squish intervertebral discs
what is the difference between the hip flexors and the abdominal flexors?
- abs pull ribcage down
- hip flexors pull hips up
- do the same job
- easier to do “ab” work with hips, so need to know how to isolate the abs
what exercises can you do that isolate the ab flexors from the hip flexors?
- put the hip flexors in passive/active insufficiency
- ex: knee elevated crunches
