Lecture 18 Flashcards
Establishing a dental home within six months of eruption of the first tooth and no later than 12 months of age to conduct a caries risk assessment and provide parental education including anticipatory guidance for prevention of oral diseases; Preventive interventions within the first year of life are critical
AAPD policy statement #4
Microbial risk; Complex microbiome; Bacteria can be transmitted vertically from caregiver to child through salivary contact, affected by the frequency and exposure; Infants whose mothers have high levels of Strep mutans, a result of untreated caries, are at greater risk of acquiring the organism earlier than children whose mothers have low levels; Horizontal transmission (between other members of a family or children in daycare) also occurs
early childhood caries (ECC)
T/F: diet does not play a role in remineralization
False
Saliva rinses away carbohydrates, buffers acids; Minerals in saliva (calcium, phosphate) re-enter tooth; Good oral hygiene; destroys biofilm so bacteria can’t attach
remineralization
caries attacking a previously intact surface
new lesion
hard and shiny form of caries that does not have to be treated
arrested caries
Educating legislators, policy makers, and third party payors regarding the consequences of and preventive strategies for ECC.
AAPD policy statement #6
Can be white spot lesion, remineralized, incipient/initial lesion, rampant
caries
3 classifications of caries
initial, moderate, and severe
Avoiding frequent consumption of liquids and/or solid foods containing sugar particularly sugar-sweetened beverages
AAPD policy statement #1
visible signs of enamel breakdown or signs the dentin is moderately demineralized; must be treated before it gets too out of control
moderate caries
Implementing oral hygiene measures no later than the time of eruption of the first primary tooth. Tooth brushing should be performed for children by a parent twice daily, using a soft toothbrush of age-appropriate size; In children under the age of three, a smear or rice-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste should be used. In children ages three to six, a pea-sized amount of fluoridated toothpaste should be used.
AAPD policy statement #2
___ is infectious, manageable, and preventable
caries
T/F: caries is a bacterial disease
True
Providing professionally-applied fluoride varnish treatments for children at risk for ECC.
AAPD policy statement #3
