Lecture 17: Hip Joint, Thigh and Leg Bones Flashcards
Where does the head of the femur articulate with the hip bones?
The acetabulum
What is the hip joint classified as?
Ball and socket, synovial joint
The fovea is an attachment site for:
the ligament to the head of the femur
What is found along the ligament to the head of the femur?
The artery to the head of the femur
Where does the transverse acetabular ligament span?
It spans the acetabular notch
What spans the acetabular notch?
The transverse acetabular ligament
What are the 3 ligaments of the hip joint?
- iliofemoral ligament
- pubofemoral ligament
- ischiofemoral ligament
(all intrinsic ligaments)
Do the 3 ligaments of the hip joint tighten during flexion or extension of the hip?
Extension of the hip
What is found deep to the skin in the lower limb?
A layer of deep fascia
What is the fascia called in the thigh?
The fascia lata
What is the fascia called in the leg?
The crural fascia
Where is the fascia lata the thickest?
On the lateral aspect, called the IT band (iliotibial band)
What creates compartments in the leg and thighs?
Extensions of the fascia lata and crural lata
What are the 2 muscles that insert into the fibres of the IT band?
- Gluteus maximus
- Tensor Fascia Lata
Where does the IT band attach to distally?
the lateral tibial condyle known clinically as Gerdy’s tubercle
What are the deep veins found in the lower limb?
medial and lateral plantar veins Anterior tibial, poterior tibial, and fibular veins popliteal vein femoral vein external and internal iliac veins inferior vena cava
What are the superficial veins found in the lower limb?
Great/long saphenous vein
Small saphenous vein
Where does the long saphenous vein begin, ascends and drains?
Begin on the dorsum of the foot
ascend medially up the leg and thigh
drains into the femoral vein in the femoral triangle
Where does the short saphenous vein begin, ascends and drains?
Begin on the dorsum of the foot
ascend posterolaterally up the leg
drains into the popliteal vein in the popliteal fossa
What are varicose veins?
The saphenous veins become dilated so that the valves no longer close properly
