Lecture 11: Muscles of the Anterior Forearm Flashcards
How many muscle compartments is the forearm divided into and what is it divided by?
2 compartments divided by the interosseous membrane
What are the superficial muscles of the anterior forearm?
Superficial Layer
- Pronator Teres
- Flexor Carpi Radialis
- Palmaris Longus
- Flexor Carpi Ulnaris
What are the middle muscles of the anterior forearm?
Middle Layer:
- Flexor Digitorum Superficialis
What are the deep muscles of the anterior forearm?
Deep Layer:
- Flexor Digitorum Profundus
- Flexor Pollicis Longus
- Pronator Quadratus
Where do many of the anterior forearm muscles originate?
From the medial epicondyle of the humerus, thus we refer to that bony landmark as the “common flexor origin”
What do the following terms mean?
- Teres
- Carpus
- Profundus
- Pollicis
- Quadratus
- Teres = cylindrical, tube-shaped
- Carpus = wrist
- Profundus = deep
- Pollicis = thumb
- Quadratus = square-shaped, 4-sided
What does vestigial mean?
Organ or part of the body that has become absent and/or functionless in the course of evolution
What is the pisiform?
Sesamoid bone formed within the tendon of flexor carpi ulnaris
The concavity of the carpus is due to which bony landmarks?
- Tubercle of the scaphoid
- Tubercle of the trapezium
- Pisiform
- Hook of hamate
