Lecture 14: The Hand Flashcards
What is the palmar aponeurosis?
Deep to the thick skin of the palm of the hand is a thick web of connective tissue called the palmar aponeurosis
The proximal aspect of the palmar aponeurosis is continuous with the __________ and ___________.
Flexor retinaculum & tendon of palmaris longus (when present)
What are the compartments of the hand?
- Thenar compartment
- Adductor compartment
- Hypothenar compartment
- Central compartment
- Interosseous compartments
What muscles are located in the thenar compartment?
- Abductor pollicis brevis
- Flexor pollicis brevis
- Opponens brevis
What are the muscles in the thenar compartment innervated by?
The recurrent branch of the median nerve
What are the muscles in the adductor compartment?
The adductor pollicis
What is the adductor pollicis innervated by?
Deep branch of the ulnar nerve
What is the function of the adductor pollicis?
Thumb adduction
What muscles are in the hypothenar compartment?
- Abductor digiti minimi brevis
- Flexor digiti minimi brevis
- Opponens digiti minimi
What is the mirror-image of the thenar compartment?
The hypothenar compartment
What is the hypothenar muscles innervated by?
The deep branch of the ulnar nerve
What are the central compartment muscles?
- Tendons of long flexors (FDS & FDP)
- Lumbricals
Where do lumbricals originate and insert into?
Originate from the tendons of FDP and insert into the extensor expansions of digit II to V
How are the lumbricals numbered?
Numbered 1-4 from lateral to medial
What are the innervations of the central compartment muscles?
1st and 2nd - Median nerve
3rd and 4th - Deep branch of ulnar nerve
