Lecture 17 - Exercise Prescription Development Flashcards
Lecture 17:
What are the PA Guidelines for Cancer Survivors?
- achieve & maintain a healthy weight
- healthy diet (high in veggies/fruits, whole grains)
- engage in regular PA (avoid inactivity & return to daily activities asap; atleast 150min exercise/wk)
Lecture 17:
What does the American College of Sports medicine say about PA Guidelines for Cancer Survivors?
- PA is safe from on & post treatment survivors
- Avoid inactivity
- return to normal activities asap after surgery
- follow USDHHS PA Guidelines (150min/wk mod to vig or 75min/wk vig & RT 2x/wk)
Lecture 17:
What 2 things will dictate the extent of an exercise prescription most?
Total body fatigue & muscular weakness
Lecture 17:
What are the 8 objectives/goals of exercise prescriptions for cancer survivors?
1.) regain & improve physical function, aerobic capacity, strength, & flexibility
2.) improve body image & QoL
3.) imp[rove body composition
4.) improve CRF, endocrine, neurological, muscular, & psychosocial outcomes
5.) reduce/delay recurrence
6.) Improve physical & psychological ability to withstand possible recurrence
7.) reduce/prevent long term late effects
8.) improve ability to withstand current/future treatment
Lecture 17:
What are some components you would include in the exercise prescription for cancer survivors?
Mode
Frequency
Intensity
Duration
Progression
Lecture 17:
What are a couple important points to remember when developing exercise prescriptions from cancer?
- be aware of special considerations
- continuously monitor survivor’s condition & change program when needed
Lecture 17:
How do we know the appropriate dose for cancer survivors exercise prescriptions?
It is still being investigated
- hard to answer as everyone is different so there are many variables to consider like;
Where you are in your cancer trajectory, treatment types, past exercise levels, etc
Lecture 17:
What type of exercise intensity is best for cancer survivors?
Moderate intensity is optimal
Lecture 17:
What is the key variable to keeping immune function optimal?
Intensity = key variable & it’s recommended that you monitor blood parameters to determine if intensity is too high
Lecture 17:
What are the guidelines for setting the Intensity for an exercise prescription for cancer survivors?
- moderate = best, working at 30-75% HR reserve
- err on side of light vs too hard
- lighter exercise is better for poor health, very de-conditioned individuals & those with balance problems
Lecture 17:
What are the guidelines for Intensity of exercise while on certain medications?
- may cause changes in HR (eg; beta blockers may cause HR not to increase as normal)
- use RPE scale to determine intensity
Lecture 17:
What are the guidelines/suggestions for setting the Mode for an exercise prescription for cancer survivors?
- incorporate both Aerobic & Resistance training
- use large muscle group exercises(help w fatigue)
- should work muscle groups that are affected by the cancer (eg; BC patients work ROM in shoulder)
Lecture 17:
What are the guidelines/suggestions for setting the Frequency for an exercise prescription for cancer survivors?
3x/wk = optimal but may fluctuate based on;
- Treatment (eg; chemo week may mean drop a few days)
- Setbacks/Complications
- Time restraints
Lecture 17:
What is the Duration of exercise dependent on in cancer survivors?
- health
- treatment status
- exercise intensity
- functional capacity
- goals
Lecture 17:
What are the guidelines/suggestions for setting the Durations for an exercise prescription for cancer survivors?
- continuous or intermittent
*Intermittent if; survivor performs poorly on aerobic capacity test
Lecture 17:
What 2 individuals would you increase duration for instead of intensity?
- older individuals & deconditioned individuals
Lecture 17:
What are the guidelines/suggestions for setting the Progressions for an exercise prescription for cancer survivors?
- progress much slower than would for general population (esp for fragile survivors)& gradually
- increase frequency, duration, or intensity one at a time for progressions
*dont increase very often in cancer patients as would in normal population
Lecture 17:
How are Resistance Bands used in exercise programs for cancer survivors?
Great for cancer patients as can be used for total body exercises
- chair based & progressive
Lecture 17:
How is Yoga used in exercise programs for cancer survivors?
Safe as long as arm & shoulder morbidities are considered
