Lectre 20 - PA Motives, Preferences, & Self-Efficacy Flashcards
Lecture 10:
What are motives/what do they refer to?
Things that motivate/encourage people to want to exercise
- typically are advantages people see in engaging in PA
Lecture 20:
What are 3 social-cognitive models/theories that include motives?
- Theory of planned behaviour (attitudes)
- Self-Determination Theory (levels of motivation)
- Social Cognitive Theory (outcome expectations)
Lecture 20:
What are some common Motives for Exercise in the General Population?
- improve fitness & health
- improve physical appearance
- fun/enjoyable
- increase social interaction
- improves psychological health
Lecture 20:
What are some common Motives for Exercise in Cancer Survivors?
- distracts mind from cancer
- improves well being
- maintain normal lifestyle
- helps cope with life & cancer stresses
- helps with recovery &control weight following
Lecture 20:
What is ultimately the most important determinant of PA in cancer survivors & general public?
Enjoyment
*important for PA maintenance
Lecture 20:
What kind of motivation is it when you
engage in physical activity for the sake of
the enjoyment?
Intrinsic (internal) motivation - doing it for yourself because you want to
Lecture 20:
How can we increase PA enjoyment for cancer Survivors?
- exercise with friends (social support)
- do something that doesn’t feel like a workout (eg; game/sport)
- outdoor group walking program
- personal client preferences
Lecture 20:
What are 3 Innate Psychological needs we’re trying to fulfil to increase intrinsic motivation for physical activity?
1.) Autonomy
2.) Competence
3.) Relatedness
Lecture 20:
When fulfilling the 3 Innate Psychological needs of self-determination theory, What is Autonomy?
Perception that behaviours are freely chosen & feel in control/have choice
- more autonomous = more likely to enjoy
Lecture 20:
How do we foster autonomy within cancer survivors?
- listen to their interests
- ask what they want to do & prescribe it in their exercise prescription
- give choice (eg; treadmill or bike or elliptical)
Lecture 20:
When fulfilling the 3 Innate Psychological needs of self-determination theory, What is Competence?
Perception that you’re good at something
- if you feel you’re good at something you’re more likely to enjoy the activity & continue it
Lecture 20:
How do we foster feelings of competence within cancer survivors?
- provide compliments to help motivate & encourage
- find activities suited for their skills & talents
Lecture 20:
When fulfilling the 3 Innate Psychological needs of self-determination theory, What is Relatedness?
Feeling of being socially connected
- people generally seek activities that will fulfil their need to have social connections
Lecture 20:
How do we foster feelings of relatedness within cancer survivors?
- opportunities to form social connections with people similar to them
- have group programs (with like people)
Lecture 20:
What is self-efficacy?
Perceived confidence in self being able to carry out a task or behaviour
Lecture 20:
What does high self-efficacy mean for exercise in the general population?
Increased chance of exercising regularly
Lecture 20:
Why is Self-Efficacy an important determinant of PA?
Side effects & cancer itself may cause survivor to doubt confidence in ability to exercise
Lecture 20:
What are the 4 stages in the model of how determinants influence PA in cancer survivors?
1.) pre-diagnosis activity, enjoyment, social support, depression, symptoms, role model, etc
2.) Self-Efficacy levels
3.) Perceived barriers
4.) Physical Activity
Lecture 20:
What are some exercise preferences for Exercise Programming in Cancer Survivors?
1.) Type of Activities - walking, gym activities, etc
2.) Location - cancer center, community gym, etc
3.) Intensity - light, moderate, vigorous, etc
Lecture 20:
What are some exercise preferences for Exercise Counselling in Cancer Survivors?
1.) From Whom? - oncologist, exercise specialist…
2.) Where? - cancer center, gym, etc
3.) Format? - face-to-face, print materials, etc
Lecture 20:
Why should we care about exercise preferences?
Enjoyment!
- if enjoy, than more likely to adhere long term
- increased psychological & emotional well-being
Lecture 20:
What are the most common exercise counselling preferences for cancer survivors?
- receive it during cancer experience
- most would like it from exercise specialists affiliated with a cancer center
- prefer private face-to-face counselling format
Lecture 20:
What are the most common exercise programming preferences for cancer survivors?
- modality, intensity, & location?
- Walking = most preferred modality (low-impact, low cost, & doesn’t require special equipment)
- Moderate = most preferred intensity (low = doesn’t feel like enough benefits & vig = too hard)
- Cancer rehab center = most preferred & home
Lecture 20:
How do we use information on determinants & preferences?
Used to design exercise intervention strategies for making survivors more active
- unisex to design optimal exercise programs that survivors will adhere to & stay motivated with
