Lecture 12 - Body Image & QoL Flashcards
Lecture 12:
Could PA improve body image in cancer populations?
There are different body image issues in cancer patients compared to general population such as;
- hair loss, scars, “kekexia” = frail/muscle wasting
*PA could improve with some of these
Lecture 12:
When discussing body image issues in cancer, how could surgery cause poor body image?
Surgical scars, removal of body parts, & lymphedema
Lecture 12:
When discussing body image issues in cancer, how could radiation cause poor body image?
Discolouration & dermatitis
Lecture 12:
When discussing body image issues in cancer, how could chemotherapy cause poor body image?
Hair loss, hair thinning, weight gain, etc
Lecture 12:
When discussing body image issues in cancer, how could hormone therapy cause poor body image?
Early menopause, & weight gain (especially in breast cancer patients
Lecture 12:
What percentage of breast cancer survivors struggle with body image?
Up to 77%
- little improvement in the 5 years after treatment
Lecture 12:
What are a few concerns that body image may lead to in cancer patients?
- anxiety
- depression
- sexual/intimacy concerns
- increased mortality risk
Lecture 12:
Of 29 interventions reviewed, how many improved body image?
Only 9 of the 25 interventions showed to improve body image
- combined PA with psycho educational psychotherapeutic approaches
Lecture 12:
What are 2 ways that exercise can improve body image?
- slimming & toning (physical changes in body)
- focus on what body can do rather than perception of “body has let me down”
Lecture 12:
Define Quality of Life
The patients ability to enjoy normal life activities
Lecture 12:
What are the 5 different domains of Quality of Life?
1.) Physical (eg; pain & nausea)
2.) Functional (eg; ability to dress & work)
3.) Emotional (eg; depression & anxiety)
4.) Social (eg; relationships w friends, family, marriages…)
5.) Spiritual (eg; views on spirituality/faith)
Lecture 12:
What happens to physical well-being of cancer patients?
Physical well-being is worst during treatment & improves afterwards
- there may be some lasting effects such as chronic diarrhea & swallowing troubles
Lecture 12:
What happens to functional well-being of cancer patients?
Functional well-being is worst/lowest during treatment & can last years into survivorship
- fatigue & loss of function (from surgery/tretament) are some examples
Lecture 12:
What happens to Emotional well-being of cancer patients?
Feelings such as; anxiety, depression, guilt (not being able to care for family), grief, & anger are some feelings
- PTSD sometimes
- ultimately cancer takes a toll on emotional health
Lecture 12:
How does PTSD impact cancer patients?
Post Traumatic Stress Disorder may occur in some individuals where they feel severe & ongoing reactions to psychological trauma
- nightmares, anxiety, depression, loss of apppetite, & irritability might occur
Lecture 12:
What happens to social well-being of cancer patients?
Declines as cancer can put strain on relationships with family & friends
- eg; spousal relationships, parent-child, or friendships
Lecture 12:
What happens to Spiritual well-being of cancer patients?
Questioning faith & become less spiritual or some even become more spiritual
Lecture 12:
How is Quality of Life typically assessed in cancer patients?
By paper & pencil questionnaires
Lecture 12:
What are 3 commonly used questionnaires/assessments for Quality of life?
1.) Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy scale
2.) European Organization for Research and Treatment of cancer (EORTC) QoL scale
3.) FACT Scales
Lecture 12:
What did the study of PA’s effect on health-related QoL conclude?
Exercise therapies improve HRQoL significantly, especially when in these 4 domains;
- social, mental, emotional, & physical functioning QoL
Lecture 12:
What was the study of Pediatric Cancer survivors QoL & PA?
30 paediatric survivors studied while hospitalized
- cross-over design so they would each be control & exercise group at some point
- 3 sessions done with 30mins each adapted PA
Lecture 12:
What were the results of the paediatric cancer survivor & QoL study?
Exercise resulted in significant improvements in HRQoL during PA periods
- physical, social, & mental well-being improved & self esteem
Lecture 12:
What are 3 ways in which exercise improves QoL?
Improve fitness
Improve strength
Improve moods
