Lecture 17 Flashcards
carbon cycle
inorganic form is CO2 in atmosphere. autotrophs convert it to organic carbon via photosynthesis which can be moved to heterotrophs and then back into the air
law of ecology
everything is connected
everywhere must go somewhere
nature knows best
theres no such thing as a free lunch
autotrophs in the C cycle
photoautotrophs: use light as energy source
chemoautotrophs: uses chemical energy source e.g methanogens consume CO2 and H2 to make CH4 they act as C sinks and are anaerobic (killed by O2)
methanotrophs
Consumes CH4, produce CO2. Also remove more toxic pollutants
decomposers
use organic C produced by dead things and break it down in the soil for the use of other organisms. Mainly fungi
predators
protists, detritivores. consumes other organisms
coral symbiosis
primitive animals which depend on symbioti relationship with algae to supply with food. miniture ecosystem. atmospheric CO2 -> algae symbiotant (sugar produced) -> coral host (C02) REPEAT
lichen symbiosis
primary producers. photosynthetic but not plants. symbiosis between algae (autotroophs) and fungi (heterotrophs)
